THREE FROM RIC BASEBALL PLAY IN PROMINENT SUMMER LEAGUES

Providence, RIóRhode Island College junior J.P. Stone (Narragansett, RI) and senior Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI) both attended the Cape Cod Baseball League tryout on Saturday, June 5, with Stone signing a temporary contract with the Bourne Braves. Sophomore Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) has also signed a temporary contract with the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Stone, a natural catcher, will serve as a backstop for the Braves. As a sophomore third baseman in 2010, he was named Second Team All-Little East. He played in 34 games, starting 33 of them. Stone batted .385 with 32 runs scored, 50 hits, 10 doubles, three triples, one home run, 25 RBI and three stolen bases. Stone owned a .531 slugging percentage, a .450 on-base percentage and a .881 fielding percentage. He led the team in batting, was tied for the top spot in triples, was second in doubles and tied for third in runs scored.

 

 

 Gary Levesque

 

A pitcher/designated hitter, Levesque was named First Team All-Little East and the team MVP this past season. He appeared in eight games, starting seven of them. Levesque was 3-3 with one save, a 3.46 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 52.0 innings pitched. He also had one complete game and one shutout. Playing primarily as a designated hitter, he played in 35 games, starting 34 of them. Levesque batted .377 with 32 runs scored, 52 hits, 17 doubles, seven home runs, 38 RBI and one stolen base. He owned a .652 slugging percentage, a .409 on-base percentage and a .889 fielding percentage. Levesque also saw time at third base. He was named the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week three times this spring. Levesque led the team in doubles, RBI and slugging percentage, tied for the top spot in homers and ranked second in batting.

 

 

 Kevin Carey

 

As a freshman right fielder in 2010, Carey played in 37 games, starting 32 of them. He batted .252 with 26 runs scored, 31 hits, five doubles, three triples, one home run, 17 RBI and nine stolen bases. Carey owned a .366 slugging percentage, a .352 on-base percentage and a .972 fielding percentage.
