TENCHER HONORED BY NACDA FOR THIRD TIME AS UNDER ARMOUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR

Providence, RIóThe National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) named Rhode Island Collegeís Don Tencher as the Northeast Div. III Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year at its annual convention last week. It is the third time in his career that Tencher has received this accolade.

Tencher accepts the award from Under Armour's Walker Jones.

Tencher is well into his second decade on the job as Rhode Island Collegeís director of athletics and has done an outstanding job of guiding the athletics program forward-a significant feat considering the extremely tough economic times.

Even though Michigan is the only state hit harder by the economic downturn than Rhode Island, Tencher has been able to take the necessary steps to ensure the quality of his student-athleteís experience hasnít been hindered.

The Anchormen and Anchorwomen have risen above and continue to experience great success as evidenced by the achievements of the past year. Four teams were ranked in the top-25 nationally, while three competed in postseason NCAA Tournaments. Assuring that students remain first, Tencher has spearheaded an effective student-athlete support program that has made a significant impact on the academic performance of RICís student-athletes. This program includes the future construction of a new facility to house the development and support of the "total student-athlete."

Tencher continues to be the programís most active and effective fundraiser in an effort to improve RICís athletics facilities and its programs. The department continues to raise a significant portion of its operating budget, plus all monies related to special projects. In addition to the construction of the "student-athlete support center," the college is embarking on the construction/renovation of a $12 million recreation/intercollegiate complex that further supports the collegeís role as one of the stateís premier athletic venues. In addition to his duties at the college, Tencher is the Chair of the NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel.
