SUTHERLAND & DRAPPI WIN, WHILE SIX OTHERS
PLACE AT ROGER WILLIAMS INVITATIONAL

Bristol, RIJunior Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) captured the 149 lbs. weight class, classmate Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) won at 133 lbs. and six additional Anchormen wrestlers placed, as Rhode Island College took fourth (12 teams) overall at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

 

Wesleyan (137), Roger Williams (128) and Johnson & Wales (126) finished ahead of RIC (125) in the 12-team field.

 

 

Junior 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland

 

Sutherland defeated Bridgewater State's John Marsh (4-4, RT) on riding time in a double tie-breaker match, while Drappi had to beat his own teammate, sophomore Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, CT), 4-2, to win his weight class. LaBeef earned a second place finish, going 4-1 with one pin, four takedowns and five reversals.

 

 

Junior 133 lbs. Travis Drappi

 

 Sutherland went undefeated on the day, going 4-0 with four takedown, two pins, one reversal and five near falls. Drappi also went unbeaten, going 4-0 with nine takedowns, two reversals and seven near-falls.

 

Senior Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) placed second, falling, 7-3, to Johnson & Wales' Brennan Ward in the title match at 184 lbs. He went 4-1 with two pins, five takedowns, three reversals and three near-falls.

 

Freshman Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) lost in the title bout at 285 lbs., falling 8-0, to Western New England's Jamison Sacco to finish second overall. He went 3-1 with two takedowns and two near-falls.

 

Sophomore Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) took fifth (4-2) at 125 lbs., while freshmen Steven Hunt (Coventry, RI) and Roy Marshall (Bridgewater, MA) finished sixth at 133 (3-3) and 141 (3-3) lbs., respectively.

 

 In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete at the Doug Parker Invitational, hosted by Springfield on Saturday, Nov. 21.
