GRIMES & LEE LEAD ANCHORMEN
PAST WESTCONN, 81-65

Danbury, CTSenior guard Jake Grimes (Providence, RI) scored 24 points, while junior forward Carl Lee (Warwick, RI) grabbed 11 rebounds, as the Rhode Island College men's basketball team downed Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut, 81-65, at Feldman Arena on Tuesday evening.

"We held a team that averages 85 points per game to 65 points, and they only got 24 in the second half on their home floor," Head Coach Bob Walsh said.  "We really stepped up our defense and our toughness in the second half."

Grimes scored over 20 points for the fourth time in five games to keep the Anchormen (10-5, 5-1) tied with Eastern Connecticut for first place on top of the Little East Standings. Sophomore forward Mason Choice (Newport, RI) contributed 10 points, five rebounds and four assists while classmate center Mike Akinrola (Woonsocket, RI) saw his first action of the season and contributed 19 points and seven rebounds.

Rhode Island College finished with a commanding 52-34 advantage on the boards. WestConn now stands at 10-4, 3-3 in the LEC

Junior center John Phillips (Hartford, CT) led the Colonial offensive charge with 13 points, followed by sophomore Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) with 12 points, and sophomore Leroy Mayers (Bronx, NY) with 11. Sophomore DaQuan Brooks (Bristol, CT), WestConn’s leading scorer entering the game, was held to six points on 2-for-14 shooting from the floor.

WestConn looked comfortable on its home floor early in the game, taking a 14-6 lead after the first five minutes.  Rhode Island College battled back to draw within two, 18-16, at the 11:39 mark, but a layup and a free throw by senior Tyshawn Gillespie (Hartford, CT) pushed the Colonials’ lead back to six points, 26-20, with nine minutes remaining in the half.

A Carl Lee layup tied the game at 38-38 with just under two minutes remaining in the half, but Robinson’s three-pointer just before the buzzer gave WestConn a 41-38 lead at intermission. It took Rhode Island College less than two minutes to take the lead in the second half.

WestConn kept the score close and tied the game at 55-55 on a layup by junior Will Jarrett (Hartford, CT) at the 13:02 mark, but with seven minutes remaining the RIC lead was 10 and the Colonials didn’t seem to have an answer for the Anchorman zone defense. The final basket of the game was a Grimes free throw with 1:31 remaining, giving Rhode Island College a 16-point lead and a chance to run out the clock for an 81-65 final margin of victory.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Emmanuel on Jan. 21 and then continue Little East Conference play when it hosts Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 23.
