DEBNAM NETS CAREER-HIGH 16 AS RIC ROLLS OVER SOUTHERN MAINE
Anchormen Win Fourth Little East Regular Season Title

 

Gorham, MEóRhode Island College junior forward Darius Debnam (Dorchester, MA) scored a career-high 16 points as the Anchormen recorded their largest margin of victory this season with an 84-53 victory at Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.

 

 

 

 With the win, the Anchormen are assured of at least a share of the 2010 Little East Conference Regular Season Championship. It is the fourth regular season title for the Anchormen in the last six years. RIC can clinch the outright championship and the right to host the 2010 Little East Tournament semifinal and final rounds with one win in its final two games.

 

 

 

The Anchormen, who win for the third straight game and record their fourth victory in five games, improve to 16-7 overall and 10-2 in the Little East Conference. RIC remain in sole possession of first place in the league standings and now have a two-game lead on second place Eastern Connecticut and UMass Dartmouth heading into the final two games of the regular season. The loss drops the Huskies to 2-21 on the season and 0-12 in the LEC.

In addition to Debnam, senior guard Jake Grimes (Providence, RI), as well as sophomore forwards Mason Choice (Newport, RI) and Mike Akinrola (Woonsocket, RI), scored in double figures with 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively, on the day. Freshman forward Steven Roberts (New Haven, CT) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

 

 

 

"We got back to making defense a priority," RIC Head Coach Bob Walsh said. "We got contributions from a lot of people in a lot of different areas and got an important road win."

 

 

 

 USM junior guard Otis Smith (Altamonte Springs, FL) led all scorers with 17 points.  Junior guard Luke Pollock (Eliot, ME) added 12 points and junior guard John Sewall (Bath, ME) pitched in with eight points.

 

 

 

Ahead by 13 at the break, Rhode Island College outscored USM 46-28 in the second half to cruise to the victory.  The Anchormen pulled away from Southern Maine with a 19-5 run that began at 13:49. After to free throws by Pollock kept USM within 13 points of RIC, the Anchorman scored nine straight points to go ahead, 61-39, with 10:23. A three from USMís Smith halted the RIC run, but the Anchormen outscored the Huskies 9-2 over the next four minutes to take a commanding 71-44 lead with 6:06 to play.

 

 

 

Southern Maine never got closer than 24 points the rest of the game. 

 

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play when the Anchormen travel to UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
