CORSAIRS SLIDE BY ANCHORWOMEN, 60-57

North Dartmouth, MA—UMass Dartmouth avenged a 23-point loss earlier this season by handing the Rhode Island College women's basketball team a 60-57 loss in Little East Conference action on Tuesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center.

RIC slips to 15-9 overall and drops to below .500 (6-7) in league action. The Corsairs improve to 10-14 overall and 5-8 in league action.

Sophomore forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, RI) posted her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior guard Denise Scott (Yonkers, NY) had 13 points, while junior backcourt mate Lauren Harrington (Exeter, RI) contributed 12 points.

Despite's Riley's efforts, RIC was outrebounded, 40-36, in the loss. The Anchorwomen shot 44 percent (22-for-50) from the field, but free throw shooting (9-for-27) proved to be the visitor's downfall. UMD shot a mere 37 percent (19-for-52) from the floor, but made the most of its trips to the charity stripe (18-for-25).

UMass Dartmouth sophomore guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, MA) led all scorers with 20 points. Junior backcourt mate Lynley DeAmato (Melrose, MA) chipped in with a 12-point effort.

The Corsairs led by four points with just under five minutes remaining.  Houtman drove the baseline for a layup making it 54-50 after consecutive offensive rebounds by senior forward Kaylin Nelson (New Bedford, MA) and junior forward Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA) kept the possession alive. A layup from RIC senior forward Jenn Knott (Narragansett, RI) cut the lead in half.  Ashmeade pushed the lead back to four on a pair of free throws, but a deep three from the wing by RIC senior guard Alice Mullen (Saunderstown, RI) pulled the Anchorwomen within a point at 56-55 with 1:34 to play setting up a dramatic finish.

After trading turnovers with RIC, Houtman literally put the game into her own hands as she drove hard to the hoop and was fouled by Mullen.  Houtman made both attempts from the line extending the lead to 58-55 with 47 seconds left. A baseline jumper by Riley again pulled the Anchorwomen within a point, forcing UMass to call timeout.  The Corsairs turned the ball over on the inbounds play and it was RIC’s turn to call for a timeout and set up a play.

A stifling UMD defense forced the Anchorwomen into a shot clock violation with just four seconds left.  Houtman was again fouled by Mullen on the inbounds play – the tenth foul for RIC – putting the Corsairs into the double bonus.  Houtman calmly sank both free throws and with no timeouts left, RIC was forced to try and get a play off, but was unsuccessful, as the Corsairs survived for the victory.

The Anchorwomen will close out the regular season at home against Plymouth State on Saturday, Feb. 20. Scott, Mullen, Knott and fellow seniors Christina Coro (North Providence, RI) and LaSheena Boyd (Stratford, CT) will be honored prior to the start as part of Senior Day.
