SUTHERLAND HEADS TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
ANCHORMEN ATTAIN ALL-NEW ENGLAND STATUS
AT NEWA CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

Springfield, MAJunior 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) placed second, earning All-New England honors for the third consecutive year, as Rhode Island College placed seventh at the 2010 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships, hosted by Western New England College on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-21.

 

 

 

 Following the meet, he was chosen by the league's 14 coaches as one of four wild-card selections to join the 10 weight class champions at the upcoming 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships to be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa beginning on Mar. 5. It will be the second year in a row he will compete at the NCAAs. Sutherland went 4-2 at the NEWA championships, losing in the finals to Bridgewater State's John Marsh, 3-1. Both of his losses at the tourney came to Marsh, the 149 lbs. champion. Sutherland is currently 39-7 on the season.

Williams (128.5) won the title and was followed by Springfield (100.5), Johnson & Wales and Wesleyan (95.0), Bridgewater State (88.5) and Southern Maine (82.0). The Anchormen totaled 78.0 points at the tournament.

 

 RIC had four wrestlers finish in fourth in their respective weight classes. Sophomore Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) went 3-2 at 125 lbs., senior Joe Manley (Wayland, MA) went 3-2 at 174 lbs., senior Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) went 2-2 at 184 lbs. and freshman Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) went 4-2 at 285 lbs.

 

 Junior Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) went 2-2 at 133 lbs. to earn a fifth place finish, while sophomore Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) went 2-3 at 141 lbs. to place sixth.

 

Rhode Island College ends the season with a 13-7 overall record and a 10-6 mark vs. NEWA competition.
