2009-10 Rhode Island College Wrestling Summary
(13-7 Overall; 10-6 in the NEWA; 3-2 in the Pilgrim League)

 

Providence, RIóHead Coach Jay Jonesí (Career record: 146-96-1, .603) team finished the 2009-10 season with a 13-7 overall record, a 10-6 mark against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) opposition and a 3-2 (third place) mark in the Pilgrim League.

 

 

 

Rhode Island College placed seventh (14 teams) at the 2010 New England Wrestling Association Championships, hosted by Springfield on Feb. 20-21. RIC had seven wrestlers attained All-N.E. status. One Anchorman advanced to compete at the 2010 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

 

During the season, RIC earned second place finishes at the Citrus (Dec. 30) and Ursinus (Jan. 16) Invitationals, while also garnering a fourth place and fifth place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14) and Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21), respectively.

 

Senior Joe Manley (Wayland, MA) wrapped up his four-year career on the mat with a record of 53-25 (.680) to go along with 80 takedowns, 17 reversals, 58 escapes, 41 near-falls and 24 pins.

 

As a senior in 2009-10, Manley earned All-New England honors at 174 lbs., for the second consecutive year, placing fourth overall at the NEWA Championships (Feb. 21). He was 18-5 with 30 takedowns, five reversals, 18 escapes, 12 near-falls and seven pins. He placed first at 174 lbs. at the Ursinus Invitational (Jan. 16) and second at both the Doug Parker (Nov. 21) and Citrus (Dec. 30) Invitationals. He was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star and was named Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week once.

 

As a junior in 2008-09, Manley earned All-New England honors at 174 lbs., placing third at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 22. Manley was 23-11 with 31 takedowns, seven reversals, 20 escapes, 14 near-falls and 10 pins on the season. He was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star.

 

As a sophomore in 2007-08, Manley was 12-7 at 174 lbs. to go along with 18 takedowns, four reversals, 18 escapes, 14 near-falls and seven pins. Manley placed fifth at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 17).

 

As a freshman in 2006-07, Manley was 0-2 at 174 and 184 lbs. with one takedown, one reversal, two escapes and one near-fall.

 

He is a communications major with a concentration in public relations and is a 2006 graduate of Wayland High School.

 

Senior Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) wrapped up his four-year career on the mat with a record of 74-50 (.597) to go along with 121 takedowns, 59 reversals, 101 escapes, 59 near-falls and 26 pins. 

 

As a senior in 2009-10, Moore earned All-New England honors at 184 lbs. by placing fourth overall at the NEWA Championships (Feb. 21). He was 23-10 with 35 takedowns, 14 reversals, 29 escapes, 21 near-falls and eight pins. He placed second at 184 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14) and fourth at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30). He was also an Honorable Mention to the Pilgrim League All-Star Team.

 

As a junior in 2008-09, Moore earned All-New England honors at 197 lbs., placing fifth at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 22. He was 15-11 with 25 takedowns, nine reversals 13 escapes, nine near-falls and six pins on the season. Moore placed fourth at 197 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov.15).

 

As a sophomore in 2007-08, Moore was 19-15 at 285 lbs. to go along with 22 takedowns, 19 reversals, 31 escapes, 13 near-falls and seven pins. He placed fifth at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 10) and fourth at the R.I.T. Invitational (Dec. 1).

 

As a freshman in 2005-06, Moore was 17-14 at 184 lbs. with 73 points, 39 takedowns, 17 reversals, 28 escapes, 16 near-falls and five pins.

 

He is a management major with a minor in computer information systems and is a 2005 graduate of King Philip High School.

 

Senior Paul Gerbino (Glen Ridge, NJ) wrapped up his two-year career on the mat with a record of 10-18 (.357) to go along with 30 takedowns, nine reversals, 10 escapes and 11 near-falls. 

 

As a senior in 2009-10, Gerbino was 4-9 with 11 takedowns, seven reversals, four escapes and six near-falls.

 

As a junior in 2008-09, Gerbino was 6-9 at 133 lbs. with 19 takedowns, two reversals, six escapes and five near-falls on the season.

 

Prior to attending RIC, Gerbino attended Essex Community College and East Stroudsburg University.

 

He is an accounting and finance major and is a 2005 graduate of Glen Ridge High School.

 

Junior Chris Dean (Copiague, NY) was 11-11 at 184-285 lbs. with 12 takedowns, four reversals, 23 escapes, five near-falls and one pin on the season. Dean placed second at 184 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14).

 

Junior Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) earned All-New England Honors by placing fifth at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 21. He was 24-7 at 133 lbs. with 45 takedowns, five reversals, 21 escapes, 27 near-falls and two pins on the season. Drappi placed first at 133 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14), the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21) and the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30). He also placed third at the Ursinus Invitational (Jan. 16). He was also named a Pilgrim League Scholar-Athlete and named Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week once.

 

Junior Brendan Guarino (Lodi, NJ) was 8-22 at 165 lbs. with 19 takedowns, nine reversals, 27 escapes, seven near-falls and five pins on the season. Guarino placed seventh at 165 lbs. at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30).

 

Junior captain Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) earned All-New England Honors by placing second at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 21 and competed at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year. He was 39-9 at 149 lbs. with 74 takedowns, 10 reversals, 41 escapes, 38 near-falls and five pins on the season. Sutherland placed first at 149 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14) and at the Ursinus Invitational (Jan. 16). He also placed second at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30), while placing third at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21). He was named the teamís MVP. Sutherland was also named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star and to its Scholar-Athlete Team.

 

Sophomore D.J. Brown (Barrington, RI) was 0-4 at 197 lbs. with one takedown, one reversal and eight escapes on the season.

 

Sophomore Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) earned All-New England Honors by placing fourth at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 21. He was 23-13 at 125 lbs. with 40 takedowns, 13 reversals, 32 escapes, 14 near-falls and 10 pins on the season. Gauthier placed second at 125 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21), third at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30) and fifth at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14). He was also named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star.

 

Sophomore Jordan Jacquo (New Britain, CT) was 3-10 at 157 lbs. with five takedowns, one reversal, 10 escapes and two near-falls on the season.

 

Sophomore Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, CT) was 10-9 at 133-141 lbs. with 16 takedowns, 11 reversals, 20 escapes, seven near-falls and five pins on the season. LaBeef placed second at 133 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14) and second at 141 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14).

 

Sophomore Scott Legacy (Bennington, VT) was 21-17 at 157 lbs. with 25 takedowns, 12 reversals, 30 escapes, 23 near-falls and five pins on the season. Legacy placed first at 157 lbs. at the Ursinus Invitational (Jan. 16) and fourth at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30).

 

Sophomore Geoff Riccio (Lancaster, MA) was 10-14 at 149-174 lbs. with 20 takedowns, two reversals, 13 escapes and two near-falls on the season. Riccio placed fourth at 149 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14).

 

Sophomore Steve Saba (Methuen, MA) was 13-14 at 197 lbs. with 34 takedowns, six reversals, 20 escapes and three near-falls on the season. Saba placed seventh at 197 lbs. at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30).

 

Sophomore Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) earned All-New England Honors by placing sixth at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 21. He was 27-9 at 141 lbs. with 57 takedowns, five reversals, 43 escapes, 26 near-falls and six pins on the season. Trasso placed second at 141 lbs. at the Citrus (Dec. 30) and Ursinus (Jan. 16) Invitationals and fourth at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21). He was also named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star.

 

Sophomore Rich Wapenyi (Bridgewater, MA) was 1-2 at 285 lbs. with two takedowns, three escapes and one near-fall on the season.

 

Freshman Remington Alves (Portsmouth, RI) was 4-15 at 141-174 lbs. with 12 takedowns, six reversals, 32 escapes, four near-falls and three pins on the season.

 

Freshman Steven Hunt (Coventry, RI) was 8-7 at 133-141 lbs. with 28 takedowns, eight reversals, 24 escapes, six near-falls and one pin on the season. Hunt placed first at 133 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14) and sixth at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14). He was also named NEWA Rookie of the Week once.

 

Freshman William Lynn (Andover, CT) was 6-13 at 133-141 lbs. with 10 takedowns, 14 escapes, four near-falls and three pins on the season. Lynn placed fourth at 141 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14).

 

Freshman Roy Marshall (Bridgewater, MA) was 11-7 at 141-157 lbs. with 41 takedowns, one reversal, 12 escapes, one near-fall and four pins on the season. Marshall placed first at 141 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14) and sixth at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14).

 

Freshman Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) earned All-New England Honors by placing fourth at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 21. He was 19-12 at 285 lbs. with 11 takedowns, one reversal, 32 escapes, three near-falls and four pins on the season. Nicoll placed second at 285 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14), fourth at the Ursinus Invitational (Jan. 16) and sixth at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30). He was also named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star.

 

Freshman Jesse Posl-Rhinehart (Conway, MA) was 0-3 at 174 lbs. with one takedown, one reversal and one escape on the season.

 

Freshman Mike Sugermeyer (Hampden, MA) was 10-15 at 125-133 lbs. with 24 takedowns, six reversals, 30 escapes, 11 near-falls and three pins on the season. Sugermeyer placed third at 125 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14) and sixth at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30).

 

Freshman Harold Weeden (East Providence, RI) was 2-2 at 149 lbs. with five takedowns, five escapes and two near-falls on the season.
