BOYER PACES RIC IN LOSS TO LYONS

Norton, MA-Sophomore outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) led the Anchorwomen with six kills and four digs, but Wheaton College spoiled Rhode Island College's opener with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-17) shutout loss in Emerson Gymnasium on Thursday evening.

 Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) recorded five kills in her collegiate debut, while sophomore setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) had nine assists.

 

 After trailing, 4-1, in the opening set, the hosts reeled off 11 unanswered points and didn't look back, as Wheaton scored 13 of the final 16 points en route to a 25-8 triumph.

 

 The Lyons again countered with a large run in the second set, stretching a 6-4 edge into a commanding, 18-4, advantage.  Rhode Island College hung around early in the third set, trailing, 7-5, before Wheaton pulled away, as the Blue and White used a 15-7 spurt to lead 22-12. 

 

Wheaton sophomore Rachel Vergara (Needham, MA) and freshman Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, NH) paced the Lyon offense with seven and six kills, respectively. Senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, MA) handed out 24 assists to move into second place on the program's all-time list, while classmate Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT and junior Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, CA/) contributed 13 and 10 digs, respectively.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will take part in the Regis Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4-5.
