LITTLE EAST TABS CARVALHO & GONZALEZ DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Providence, RI-Senior midfielder Corey Carvalho (Dartmouth, MA) and freshman midfielder Mariah Gonzalez (Harrisville, RI) were named the Little East Conference Defensive Players of the Week for their respective performances in men's and women's soccer.

Carvalho played an instrumental role in leading the Rhode Island College men's soccer team to a 2-0 mark this past week. On Sept. 11, he recorded the game-winning goal, his second on the campaign, in a 1-0 victory at Husson . The Anchormen defense limited the Eagles to just four shots in 90 minutes of action. Earlier in the week, Rhode Island College held Lasell scoreless over the final 77:28 for the come-from-behind, 2-1, victory. The Anchormen posted a team 0.50 goals against average and havenít allowed a goal in the last 167:28 of action.

Gonzalez and her Rhode Island College defensive teammates posted their first shutout victory on the campaign with a 4-0 win over Mitchell College on Sept. 11. The Anchorwomen stifled the Mariners offensive attack, allowing the visitors just five shots on net. Rhode Island College raised its overall record to 2-0, marking the programís best start since 2006.

 

Head Coach John Mello's men's team is 3-2 overall and will open Little East Conference play at UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, Sept. 18.

 

Head Coach Mike Koperda's team is 2-0 and will travel to Salve Regina on Wednesday, Sept. 15 before hosting UMass Dartmouth in the LEC opener on Saturday, Sept. 18.
