LAZAR & GRAHAM KEEP RIC UNBEATEN
Anchorwomen Grab Win, 4-0, Over UMass Dartmouth in LEC Opener

Providence, RI- The Rhode Island College Anchorwomen continued their tear through the early portion of the 2010 schedule with a 4-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday at the RIC Soccer Field in the first Little East Conference match of the season for both squads.

Sophomore midfielder Libby Lazar (Wakefield, RI) and freshman midfielder Jessica Graham (Wakefield, RI) each scored their first two respective goals of the season in the victory. The Anchorwomen, now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference, are off to their best start since the 1999 season and second-best in program history.  The four September wins surpass last season's total of three.

Sophomore midfielder Libby Lazar

Lazar and Graham, who were formerly teammates at South Kingstown High School, took turns lighting the scoreboard, with Lazar scoring the odd-numbered markers and Graham notching the even-numbered tallies. Junior forward Ashley Choiniere (Hope, RI) assisted on three of the goals, while Graham and freshman midfielder Mariah Gonzalez (Harrisville, RI) had one assist apiece.

The Anchorwomen got off to a fast start on a fortunate bounce in the seventh minute. Taking the ball from out of bounds, Choiniere fired a signature flip throw directly on net. The heave struck Corsair senior netminder Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA) squarely on the hands, but bounced back out to the middle of the box where Lazar was waiting to deliver a left-footed offering to the right side of an empty net. Five minutes later, the Anchorwomen again quickly took the ball from out of bounds into the net.  Gonzalez perfectly executed a corner kick from the left corner, careening off the forehead of Graham inside the right post to give the Anchorwomen the 2-0 advantage that they carried into the intermission.

The 2-0 score held into the 61st minute, when a throw in from Choiniere entered heavy traffic near the left post. The throw resulted in a header by Graham, which Lazar redirected with a header of her own inside the left post. In the 68th minute,  the Anchorwomen rounded out the scoring. Graham took a feed from Choiniere and sent a long, arcing shot from the left side into the right side of the net.

Senior goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) was solid in net, making nine saves, to earn the win (4-0). Pirri gave way to freshman Abygayle Fisher (Exeter, NH) who played final 10 minutes and grabbed one save as the pair combined to post the shutout. Braga (2-3) was forced to make four saves in a losing effort.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play host to Bridgewater State on Tuesday, September 21 at 6 p.m. at the RIC Soccer Field. The Corsairs return home to host Connecticut College in Dartmouth on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
