PATRIARCA & TAVARES LEAD ANCHORMEN
TO SHUTOUT WIN
RIC Holds PSU Scoreless for Fifth Consecutive Season

Providence, RI-The Rhode Island College men’s soccer team scored three first half goals and played shutout defense from start to finish as the Anchormen defeated Plymouth State University, 3-0, in Little East Conference play held at the RIC Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Anchormen shut out the Panthers. Saturday’s match marks the eighth straight contest in which the Anchormen have  held the opponent to one goal or fewer, going 7-1 over that span. With the victory, the Anchormen improve to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in Little East play, while the Panthers fall to 3-7-1 and 0-4, respectively. Coupled with Keene State’s, 1-1, tie at UMass Dartmouth, the Anchormen now stand just one point behind the Owls for first place in the Little East Conference.

 Senior midfielder Louis Tavares

The Anchormen took advantage of a pair of Panther miscues in the 12th minute to claim the game’s first goal. Opportunity arose after a Plymouth foul gave junior Hector Espildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain) a free kick just outside the box. After Espildora Fortuno fired a low-lining shot in the vicinity of the goal, a Plymouth State defender errantly pushed a ricochet off his foot and into the left side of the goal to give RIC the, 1-0, lead.

From there, the Anchormen increased their lead in more conventional fashion.  In the 20th minute, junior forward Mike Patriarca (Warren, RI) dribbled up to the right end line, closely guarded by PSU’s sophomore defender Joakim Martinsson (Morlunda, Sweden). Patriarca made multiple fakes toward the net in order to create just enough space to drop back and deliver a perfect pass to senior midfielder Louis Tavares (East Providence, RI). From right in front of the keeper, Tavares sent his shot straight up into the ceiling of the net to double the advantage, 2-0.

 Junior forward Mike Patriarca

Patriarca rounded out the scoring in the 37th minute. From long range, Patriarca came from the right side and delivered a bouncing shot past the dive of sophomore keeper Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) to tally the afternoon’s final goal.  Sophomore defender Tucker Shepard (Tiverton, RI) earned an assist for his direct throw-in to Patriarca.

Before the match, a moment of silence was held throughout the RIC Soccer Field in honor of Shepard’s late father William, who passed earlier in the week after a long illness.

Ohlsson, who fell to 1-6-1 on the season, registered four saves while allowing two goals in net for the Panthers.  RIC junior keeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA) improved to 8-2 on the season, making two saves en route to his fifth shutout of the year.

The Anchormen held only a slim, 11-10, edge in shots while the Panthers had six corner kicks to RIC’s four.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Salem State on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m.
