SMITH TIES RIC RECORD FOR SINGLE SEASON POINTS IN LOSS TO WARRIORS
Choiniere Scores as RIC Falls, 6-1, at Eastern Connecticut

Mansfield, CT-Junior forward Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) tied the Rhode Island College women’s soccer program’s record for single season points as she set up classmate striker Ashley Choiniere’s (Hope, RI) late goal, but the Anchorwomen fell, 6-1, to Eastern Connecticut at the Mansfield Complex.

Smith will have a chance to surpass Joan Hencler’s (1996-99) total of 35 when RIC (7-6, 1-4) takes to the pitch at home against Westfield State on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Ranked first in New England, Eastern (13-0-1, 5-0 LEC) remained undefeated overall this year and moved to within a win of at least a share of the Little East Conference regular-season championship and the LEC tournament’s No. 1 seed with its 11th straight win.

Behind sophomore forward Daniela Marchitto’s (Orange, CT) first career hat track, ECSU defeated RIC for the ninth time in the last 10 meetings.

With the win, Eastern remains the only unbeaten team ranked in New England. Ranked No. 13 nationally, Eastern scored three goals in each half and has now outscored its 14 opponents this season by a 37-9 count. Junior midfielder Jo-Ann Merheb (Bethel, CT) recorded the first multiple-goal game of her three-year career to give Eastern a 2-0 lead 20 minutes into play and Marchitto scored her first with 13 minutes left in the first half to give the Warriors a 3-0 advantage at the half.

After being taken down in the box, Jo-Ann Merheb converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute for the first goal, and sophomore forward Taylor Buchanan (Ellington, CT) sprung Merheb with a perfect through-ball to make it 2-0. The first of Marchitto’s three goals – all coming on 1v1 situations with the keeper from close range – came on assists from freshman midfielder Tamar Merheb (Bethel, CT) and sophomore assist leader Kelly Wallace (South Windsor, CT).

Buchanan scored her team-leading 11th goal of the year to make it 5-0 with 10 minutes left. The 11 goals equals the ninth-highest total in a season in program history.

 Junior forward Ashley Choiniere

Choiniere finally put RIC on the board in the 86th minute. She worked a give-and-go with Smith and beat Eastern sophomore keeper Mackenzie MacLeod (Northfield, CT) on a breakaway with a hard, low shot under the charging keeper. The goal was the 10th of the season for Choiniere.

RIC senior goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) made seven stops in a losing effort, before giving way to freshman Abygayle Fisher (Exeter, NH) for the final 20 minutes.
