HEIDEL LEADS RIC TO WINS OVER
LANCERS & HUSKIES
Anchorwomen Register Pair of Shutouts

Providence, RI-Senior middle blocker Tess Heidel (Warwick, RI) led the Rhode Island College offense with 21 kills as the Anchorwomen swept Worcester State and Little East Conference rival Southern Maine, at a womenís volleyball tri-match played at The Murray Center.

RIC (13-15, 2-3 LEC) handled the Lancers (13-14) in the morningís first match, 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-19), then breezed by the Huskies (6-20, 0-5), 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-22), to pick up an all-important conference victory. Worcester State swept USM, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-15), in the middle contest.

 

Heidel hit .500 with 11 kills, coupled with only one error in 20 attempts in the win over WSU. Sophomore outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) had 15 winners, while classmate setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) handed out 30 assists. Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) contributed six kills, four blocks and a team-high seven digs.

Worcester State freshman outside hitter Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) led the visitors with nine kills and a match-high 11 digs. Classmate setter Shawna Strazzere (Billerica, MA) was credited with 19 assists.

 

The Lancers rebounded from the loss with a win over the Huskies, led by sophomore middle blocker Becky Lebelís (Millbury, MA) eight kills. Brown posted seven winners, two service aces and five digs. Sophomore setter Jodi Hallett (Gill, MA) set up 22 points.

 

USM junior outside hitter Kayla Cotsis (Biddeford, ME) and senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, NH) led the Huskies with six kills apiece. Shuttle registered 12 digs.

 

The Anchorwomen climbed within one win of the .500 mark in league action with the victory over USM. Heidel continued her torrid hitting pace with 10 kills, committing just one error in 15 attempts (.600), to go along with a team-high five digs. Boyer finished the match just one kill shy of double digits. Ho and freshman setter Chelsea Murphy (Pascoag, RI) combined for 22 (13, 9) assists.

 

Shuttle had eight kills for the visitors, while senior defensive specialist Samantha Ellis (Westerly, RI) made eight digs.

 

In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will continue Little East Conference play at Western Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
