REBELLO & WERCHADLO TAKE TOP SINGLES MATCHES IN, 5-4, LOSS TO PRIDE

Springfield, MA-Senior Nate Rebello (Pawtucket, RI) and freshman Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) scored singles victories at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, but the Anchormen were edged by Springfield, 5-4, in menís tennis action played at Appleton Courts.

Rebello defeated SC (3-1) sophomore Ben Burnap (Westerly, RI) at No. 1 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-2.  Werchadlo pushed the Anchormen further out in front with his (6-3, 6-5) defeat of junior Doug Nickerson (Falmouth, ME) at second spot.

The contest swayed when RIC was unable to keep building momentum, losing a tight contest at No. 3 singles. There, Springfield junior Zach O'Leary (Westboro, MA) got the better of RIC senior Mike Aiello (Scituate, RI) (3-6, 6-0, 6-4) after dropping the first set. 

 

RIC picked up a third singles victory in the No. 4 slot, where freshman Kyle Kelaghan (East Greenwich, RI) defeated Springfield senior Eric Henne (Bristol, CT) by a score of 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

RIC fell behind early in doubles action, 2-1. The lone RIC bright spot was the No. 2 tandem of Aiello and Kelaghan bested Henne and O'Leary, 8-2.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Johnson & Wales on Thursday, Jan. 31 (3:30 p.m.).
