DeWALD’S 12-STRIKEOUT, THREE-HITTER PACES BASEBALL TO, 8-3, WIN OVER WILDCATS

Providence, RI-Junior Mike DeWald (Hope Valley, RI) fired a complete game three-hitter with a career-high 12 strikeouts as Rhode Island College downed cross-city rival Johnson & Wales, 8-3 at Anchorman Field on Friday afternoon.

DeWald (2-1) went the distance to record the first complete game effort for the Anchormen (11-11) this season.

The Wildcats (16-12-1) put one run on the board in the top of the first. Senior first baseman Matt Yeager (Glendale, AZ) worked a one-out walk and ended up advancing to second as RIC committed an error on senior left fielder Teddy Katz’s (Pittsburgh, PA) sacrifice bunt attempt. DeWald forced a fielder’s choice ground out, but Yeager scored on a delayed double steal to put the visitors in the lead, 1-0.

In the fourth, JWU made it 2-0 as senior shortstop Mike Murphy (Pawtucket, RI) brought in another on a fielder’s choice grounder.

Freshman starter Tim Ashworth (West Chesterfield, NH) lived dangerously through three innings, allowing three hits and walking two, but RIC could not break through. The Anchormen had the bases loaded in the first and the leadoff runners on first and second in the third, but came away empty handed.

Ashworth gave way to freshman Rob Clark (Cranston, RI) in the fourth and the new look led to three RIC runs. Junior left fielder Brent Hopkins (Cranston, RI) and senior right fielder Ronnie Bracchi (Wappingers Falls, NY) greeted the righty with back-to-back singles. With one down, senior catcher Justin Corso (Cranston, RI) belted an RBI double down the left field line to make it 2-1. Sophomore center fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) laid down a perfectly placed bunt single down the third base line, which allowed Bracchi to score the tying run. Junior shortstop Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, MA) brought in Corso with the go ahead run on an RBI ground out.

RIC chased Clark from the game in the fifth as junior first baseman Dan Hopkins (Cranston, RI) and senior designated hitter Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI) got aboard via a walk and single, respectively. Junior Marc Sommerhalter (Emerson, NJ) was brought on and got Brent Hopkins to fly out to center field. Bracchi followed by breaking the game open with an opposite field triple that eluded diving JWU freshman right fielder Tim Printer (Coventry, RI). Bracchi trotted home as the relay throw was off the mark, which gave RIC a 6-3 advantage.

DeWald settled in nicely retiring 11 straight Wildcats through the top of the ninth. The Anchormen added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Allaire and sophomore second baseman Joan Mustafa (Providence, RI) notched RBI singles.

JWU got one run back in the ninth as senior center fielder Bryan Sayers (Chelmsford, MA) doubled to center field with one down and eventually scored on a RIC throwing error.

Clark (1-1) took the loss for JWU. Bracchi went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Allaire went 2-for-5 with one run scored and a pair of RBI, while Levesque (2-for-4) rounded out the RIC contingent with multiple hits.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Southern Maine with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon (noon).
