RIC BREEZES BY SALEM STATE IN LEC ACTION
Anchormen Advance to Face WestConn in Semifinals

Providence, R.I.-Third-seeded Rhode Island College bested sixth-seeded Salem State, 5-2, in first round action of the 2011 Little East Conference Menís Tennis Tournament played at the RIC Tennis Courts. The Anchormen (10-5) will advance to face second-seeded Western Connecticut in Danbury on Thursday, May 5 (3 p.m.), while the Vikings (1-11) see their season come to an end.

 

RIC (10-5) reached the 10-win milestone for the first time in 18 years (1993) with the victory. The Anchormen defeated Salem State, 7-2, on April 25 during their meeting in the regular season.

 

 

 Senior No. 4 Singles Mike Aiello

 

The Vikings opened the match by taking two of three in doubles action. Senior Alex Eisath (Renon, Italy) and junior Josh Giller (Peabody, MA) won (8-5) at No. 1 doubles, while freshman Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, MA) and junior Joe Kim (North Andover, MA) earned a victory (8-5) at No. 3 doubles.

 

The Anchormen responded by winning four singles matches to end the match early. Freshman No. 3 singles Kyle Kelaghanís (East Greenwich, RI) win (6-2, 6-4) officially secured the win for the home team. Freshman Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) won (6-3, 6-1) at No. 2 singles, senior Mike Aiello (Scituate, RI) won (6-0, 6-1) at No. 4 singles and sophomore Nate Lee (Bar Harbor, ME) won (6-1, 6-2) at No. 5 singles.

 

 

 Freshman Kyle Kelaghan

 

Aiello and Kelaghan combined for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

 

Rhode Island College, which was without Werchadlo, was defeated, 9-0, by WestConn in during the two teamsí regular season matchup on April 27.
