Anchormen Fall to WestConn, 5-1, in LEC Semis

Danbury, Conn.-Third-seeded Rhode Island College lost, 5-1, at second-seeded Western Connecticut in semifinal action of the 2011 Little East Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament played at WestConn’s Westside Courts.


The Anchormen (10-6) end their season with 10 wins, the most since 1993. Head Coach Lorne Teeter has steadily improved the program over the past two seasons. The year prior to his arrival, RIC was 2-13. He guided the Anchormen to a 6-9 record last spring and improved on the win total by four this season.


Senior Mike Aiello (Scituate, RI) picked up the club’s lone victory with a straight set win (6-1, 6-1) at No. 4 singles.

The Colonials (10-2) will defend their 2010 crown at UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, May 7. The battle for the automatic NCAA Division III Tournament berth is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Corsairs blanked University of Southern Maine, 5-0 in the other semifinal match on Thursday afternoon.


WestConn raced out to a 3-0 advantage after sweeping through the doubles competitions. Troy Pandolfi (Danbury, CT) and John Phillips (Hartford, CT) defeated senior Nate Robello (Pawtucket, RI) and freshman Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI), 8-3, at top pairs.


Austin Werner (Fairfield, CT) and Andrew Kelley (Weston, CT) downed freshman Kyle Kelaghan (East Greenwich, RI) and Aiello, 8-5, in the second doubles flight, while freshmen Brian Bucknam (Woodbury, CT) and Ryan Klem (Newport, RI) took out sophomore Nate Lee (Bar Harbor, ME) and junior Jason Morin (East Providence, RI), 8-5, in the final combo match.


In the race to five wins, Phillips defeated Werchadlo (6-3, 6-4) at No. 2 singles and Klem closed out the semifinals will a (6-2, 7-5) decision over sophomore Jack Adamo (Warwick, RI) at No. 6 singles.
