Anchormen Claim Sixth at
Citrus Invitational

Providence, R.I.The Rhode Island College wrestling team returned home yesterday after a successful sixth place finish (14 teams) at the highly competitive Citrus Invitational held in Florida on Dec. 29-30. The Anchormen totaled a score of 89, while Upper Iowa took home the title with a point total of 174.

 

RIC had five wrestlers place at the tourney, including three second place finishers.

 

 

 Senior 133 lbs. Travis Drappi

 

Senior Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) went 4-1 at 133 lbs., falling in the title match (7-2) to Upper Iowa's Kyle Pedretti, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in NCAA Div. II. Drappi is 14-2 on the season.

 

 

 Senior 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland

 

Senior Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) went 4-1 at 149 lbs., falling in the title match (WBF 3:38) to Augsburg's Tony Valek, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Div. III wrestling. The loss snapped an 11-match winning streak for Sutherland who is now 11-1 on the season.

 

 

 Junior 141 lbs. Mike Trasso

 

Junior Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) went 3-1 at 141 lbs., falling in the title match (5-2) to Cornell College's Kevin Donahue who is nationally ranked. Trasso is 15-2 on the season. Trasso upset Pedretti's Upper Iowa teammate Steve Baker in the semifinals, who was a Div. II national qualifier and in the all-American round at that tournament. Baker had pinned his previous two opponents at 0:40 and 0:24 before Trasso defeated him.

 

 

 Junior 125 lbs. Brandon Gauthier

 

Junior Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) piled up the most victories for the RIC grapplers, going 7-1 with a team-high four pins en route to a third place mark. He is now 15-4 on the season. Gauthier's only loss came to Augsburg's Josh Roberts, ranked No. 5 nationally, in an early round match. Roberts would eventually win at 125 lbs.

 

 

 Sophomore 157 lbs. Ryan Rheaume

 

Sophomore Ryan Rheaume (Riverhead, NY) went 4-2 to earn a seventh place finish at 157 lbs. and raise his personal mark to 8-6.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will travel to New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rival WPI on Wednesday, Jan. 12.
