LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT
FOR ANCHORMEN

Providence, RIóRhode Island College came back from an 18-3 deficit by winning the last four bouts, but fell two points shy, 18-16, of cross-city rival Johnson & Wales in a Pilgrim Wrestling League match held at The Murray Center.

 

The contest of the night was held at 285 lbs. with the visitors holding a 15-3 advantage. RIC (7-6, 0-1) junior Devin Callahan-Cormier (Milford, MA) battled JWU sophomore Humphrey Swift (Danbury, CT) to a 1-1 stalemate after three periods. Despite the valiant effort and avoiding several Swift offensive attacks, Callahan-Cormier was finally taken down late in sudden victory to put the Wildcats (12-6-1, 3-0-1) up, 18-3, with four matches to go.

Junior Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) got the rally started with a 4-1 win over JWU sophomore Joe Pronk (Marshfield, MA) at 125 lbs. Senior 133 lbs. Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) followed with a 1-0 victory, on an escape, over junior John Donaleski (Bellville, NJ) to pull RIC within nine points with two matches to go.

The hosts needed two majors to at least tie the match and junior 141 lbs. Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) used a five-takedown effort to score a 12-3 win over freshman Colby Clarke (Foster, RI) at 141 lbs. Needing five points to tie, RIC freshman Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) earned a 7-2 win, but was held off by JWU sophomore Dan Franco (Staten Island, NY) who fell by only a three-point decision.

Johnson & Wales won five of the first six bouts to build its early advantage. Major wins by sophomore Colin Lenhardt (Hayes, VA) and Brennan Ward (Waterford, CT), both ranked  No. 1 in New England at 174 and 184 lbs., respectively, proved to be significant hindrances to the Anchorman comeback effort.

 

Sophomore 197 lbs. William Mulligan (Towaco, NJ), ranked No. 2 in the region, also a scored a major decision victory.

 Seniors Travis Drappi and Kevin Sutherland were presented with their 2010 National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American
plaques prior to the start of the match.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Springfield tomorrow afternoon for a quad-match with Norwich and Wesleyan.
