RIC HAMMERS CORSAIRS TO SWEEP SEASON SERIES
Riley Inflicts More Damage on LEC Opponents

Providence, R.I.-Junior forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, RI) posted her 14th double-double of the season with 21 points and a game-high 16 rebounds as Rhode Island College knocked off UMass Dartmouth, 81-45, in Little East Conference women’s basketball action played at The Murray Center.

 

The Anchorwomen (17-6, 8-5 LEC) win for the fifth time in their last six games as they now have downed the Corsairs (7-17, 3-10 LEC) for the 14th time in the two teams’ last 16 meetings.

Junior guard Stephanie Coro (North Providence, RI) led all scorers with 22 points, while sophomore guard Ashley O’Dell (Lincoln, RI) was dominant off the bench with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

 

RIC made the most of its three-point shooting, cashing in on 10-of-20. Coro, O’Dell and freshman guard Stephanie Prusko (Lincoln, RI) each sank three from behind the arc.

Senior guard Lauren Harrington (Exeter, RI) was a force defensively with nine rebounds, three steals and a block, while also handing out four assists. Junior point guard Nicole Girard (Foster, RI) dished out a game-high six helpers.

 

UMass Dartmouth was up by three points, 9-6, just 2:34 into the game, before the Anchorwomen broke the contest open, erupting for a 17-0 run that the visitors would never recover from. 

 

RIC led, 41-20, at the half and UMD would not get closer than the halftime margin of 19 the rest of the way.

 

RIC shot 47 percent (29-of-62) from the field, which was bolstered by the 50-percent effort from downtown. The Anchorwomen held a 15-rebound advantage, 48-33, and made 12 steals.

The Corsairs shot 29 percent (16-of-55) from the field and struggled mightily in the first 20 minutes, making just six of their 31 attempts.

 

UMD senior guard Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA) led the visitors with 13 points, while sophomore forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA) contributed nine points and six rebounds.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Norwich on Thursday, Feb. 17.
