CORO TIES SEASON-HIGH IN, 71-59, WIN OVER NORWICH
Another Double-Double for Riley; Harrington Honored on Senior Day

Providence, R.I.-Junior guard Stephanie Coro (North Providence, RI) equaled her season-high with 26 points and six three-pointers, as the Rhode Island College women’s basketball team downed Norwich, 71-59, at The Murray Center.

 

RIC (18-6) notched its 18th win as the Anchorwomen are still within striking distance of the program record of 20 with a definite two games left to play. The Anchorwomen win for the third consecutive game and the sixth time in the club’s last seven contests. Norwich (15-9) suffers its third straight setback.

Junior forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, RI) registered her 15th double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Ashley O’Dell (Lincoln, RI) cashed in for three-pointers as part of a 14-point effort.

 

Senior guard Lauren Harrington (Exeter, RI), who was honored as part of World Trophies Senior Night prior to the start, contributed nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior point guard Nicole Girard (Foster, RI) dished out a game-high seven helpers.

 

The Anchorwomen, who improve to 10-1 in non-league games, found themselves down, 19-17, at 10:34 of the first half, before running off 12 unanswered points. Coro accounted for six of the points, on two treys, giving the hosts a 29-19 advantage with 3:24 left to play in the first half.

RIC led by nine, 35-26, at the break. Coro nailed her first four shots of the second half and the Anchorwomen ran off nine straight in the first 2:09 of the second half to effectively put the game out of reach.

 

The Cadets cut their deficit to 10 points, 65-55, with 4:39 left, but the damage was already done. O’Dell converted three shots to keep the visitors at bay.

 

RIC shot 38 percent (28-of-73) from the field, which was helped along by 11 good longballs.

 

The Cadets shot 39 percent (24-of-61) and outrebounded their hosts, 43-40. The two teams combined for only 13 free throw attempts in the game.

 

Senior forward Christine Daniels (Concord, NH) posted 22 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double effort of her own. Classmate forward Laurel McWilliams (Swanton, VT) chipped in with 17 points and 12 boards.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the regular season with its final Little East Conference contest of the campaign at Plymouth State on Saturday, Feb. 19.
