GAUTHIER CLAIMS NEW ENGLAND
CHAMPIONSHIP AT 125 lbs.
Junior Co-Captain Heads to NCAA Championships

Hartford, Conn.Junior Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) went 5-1 and pinned Wesleyan's Chris Alvanos in the finals to win the 125 lbs. weight class at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships at Trinity College.

 

 Gauthier attains All-New England status for the second consecutive season (4th, 2010) and will compete at the NCAA Div. III Championships in LaCrosse, Wisc. on March 11.

 Gauthier, who was seeded No. 1, won his first four matches before facing Alvanos in the finals. The Cardinal senior, who had already lost once, defeated Gauthier, 7-4, forcing a deciding match in the double-elimination format. Gauthier scored a pin at 5:40 to claim the title.

 

The Anchormen finished in eighth place with a team score of 58.5. Springfield won the New England Championship with a score of 141.0.

 

 

 Senior 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland

 

 

 

 Senior 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA), who was also a No. 1 seed, saw his tournament title hopes dashed as he had to withdraw due to an injury. He went 2-1 at the tournament and claimed All-England honors for the fourth consecutive season with a fourth place finish.

 

 

 Junior 141 lbs. Mike Trasso

 

 

 

 Junior 141 lbs. Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) was the lone other Anchorman to earn All-New England honors, placing fifth with a 3-2 record.
