ANCHORMEN SET TO BATTLE PENN STATE BEHREND IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

Providence, R.I.óThe Rhode Island College menís basketball team will make the trek to Oswego, N.Y. to battle Penn State Behrend in first round action of the 2011 NCAA Div. III Menís Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 4.

 

RIC (19-7) is making its fifth consecutive trip to the Big Dance and will face the Lions (23-4), who fell in the finals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference to La Roche.

 

 

 

Oswego State (23-4), from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), will host Wells (17-11), from the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), in the other first round game. The Lakers fell to Brockport in the finals of the SUNYAC Championship, while the Express knocked off Penn State Harrisburg in the NEACís finals.

 

The Anchormen are 6-4 in NCAA Tournament action under Head Coach Bob Walsh, reaching the Elite Eight in 2007 and the Sweet 16 in 2010.

 

The Anchormen claimed their fourth Little East Conference Tournament Championship for the program in the last five years (2010, í08, 07) with a 62-49 win over Eastern Connecticut in the finals of the 2011 Little East Conference Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 26. RIC claimed a share of the LEC Regular Season Championship, its fifth in seven years, with a 11-3 league mark.
