THREE ANCHORMEN NAMED
ALL-LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE

Providence, R.I.—Juniors Mike Akinrola (Woonsocket, RI) and Mason Choice (Newport, RI), along with senior Antone Gray (Providence, RI), were named All-Little East Conference for their respective performances this season.

 

Choice was named First Team All-Little East and to the league’s All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive season. The forward has played in 26 games, starting all of them. Choice is averaging 11.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He scored a season-high 24 points at Roger Williams on Jan. 5, pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out nine assists at Western Connecticut on Feb. 8 and swiped four steals on three occasions. He was named the Little East Player of the Week once on the season.

Akinrola was named First Team All-Little East Conference. The center has played in 26 games, starting all of them. He is averaging 14.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Akinrola scored a season-high 26 points at Johnson & Wales on Nov. 30 and pulled in 13 rebounds vs. Keene State on Feb. 25. He posted two double-doubles on the season and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2011 Little East Conference Tournament. He was named the Little East Player of the Week once on the season.

Gray was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. He was named to the Second Team as a junior (2010) and was a First Team selection as a sophomore (2009). Gray has played in 17 games, starting all of them. The point guard is averaging 12.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He scored a season-high 22 points twice, most recently against Keene State on Feb. 25, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out 12 assists at Roger Williams on Jan. 5, and swiping four steals twice. He was named the Little East Player of the Week once on the season.

 

 

 Senior guard Antone Gray

 

Head Coach Bob Walsh’s team captured the program’s fifth Little East Conference Regular Season Championship (sharing the title with Western Connecticut) in seven years and won the LEC Tournament for the fourth time in five years.

 

The men’s basketball team will make the trek to Oswego, N.Y. to battle Penn State Behrend in first round action of the 2011 NCAA Div. III Men’s Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 4.

 

RIC (19-7) is making its fifth consecutive trip to the Big Dance and will face the Lions (23-4), who fell in the finals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference to La Roche.

 

Oswego State (23-4), from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), will host Wells (17-11), from the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), in the other first round game. The Lakers fell to Brockport in the finals of the SUNYAC Championship, while the Express knocked off Penn State Harrisburg in the NEAC’s finals.

 

The Anchormen are 6-4 in NCAA Tournament action under Head Coach Bob Walsh, reaching the Elite Eight in 2007 and the Sweet 16 in 2010.
