PILGRIM LEAGUE HONORS
SEVEN RIC WRESTLERS

Providence, R.I.—Seven members of the Rhode Island College wrestling team were recognized by the Pilgrim Wrestling League for their performances during the 2010-11 season.

 

Junior Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) was named a First Team All-Star for the second consecutive season and was selected to the league’s Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team. Gauthier was the New England Champion as 125 lbs. and will compete at the 2011 NCAA Div. III National Championships next weekend in La Crosse, Wisc. He is currently 37-6 with 56 takedowns, eight reversals, 36 escapes, 16 near-falls and a team-high 16 pins on the season. Gauthier placed third at both the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 13) and the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30).

Senior Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) was named a First Team All-Star at 133 lbs. and was selected to the league’s Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team. He finished the season with a 26-9 record to go along with 40 takedowns, 11 reversals, 32 escapes, 26 near-falls and five pins. Drappi placed third at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 13), first at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 20) and second at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30).

Senior Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) was named a First Team All-Star and was selected to the league’s Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team. Sutherland earned All-New England honors for the fourth consecutive season with a fourth place finish at 149 lbs. at the N.E. Championships on Feb. 26-27. He was 26-2 with 55 takedowns, one reversal, 34 escapes, 29 near-falls and two pins. Sutherland placed first at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 13) and second at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30).

Junior Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) was named a Second Team All-Star. He earned All-New England honors for the second consecutive season with a fifth place finish at 141 lbs. at the N.E. Championships on Feb. 26-27. Trasso was 33-5 with a team-high 67 takedowns, six reversals, 25 escapes, 12 near-falls and three pins. Trasso placed first at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 13), third at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 20) and second at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30).

Freshman Brandon Regnault (Johnston, RI) was named a Second Team All-Star. He was 13-9 at 285 lbs. with 17 takedowns, eight reversals, 10 escapes, five near-falls and seven pins.

Senior Brendan Guarino (Lodi, NJ) was an Honorable Mention to the All-Star Team. He was 15-15 at 165/174 lbs. with 30 takedowns, a team-high 19 reversals, 41 escapes, nine near-falls and three pins on the season.

Junior Geoff Riccio (Lancaster, MA) was named to the Pilgrim League’s Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team. He was 10-8 at 157 lbs. with 27 takedowns, two reversals, 19 escapes, four near-falls and one pin. Riccio took second at the New England Futures Tournament on Feb. 20.

Head Coach Jay Jones’ team placed eighth (14 teams) with a score of 58.5 at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships on Feb. 26-27. RIC finished the season with a 11-10 overall record, a 9-6 mark against NEWA opponents and was 3-2 in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.
