Matt Lopes Joins Sports Information Staff at Rhode Island College

Providence, RIóMatt Lopes has been named an athletic media relations intern at Rhode Island College. Working alongside Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Scott Gibbons, Lopes will assist in all aspects of promoting RICís 21 varsity programs and will serve as the primary broadcaster for the Anchormen and Anchorwomen.


ďI couldnít ask for a better opportunity,Ē Lopes said. ďIíve always had a desire to work in college athletics, so this is going to be a great experience for me. I just canít wait to get started.Ē




Lopes comes to RIC after spending the summer with the Brockton Rox, an independent professional baseball organization in Can-Am League. Lopes served as studio producer for each of the radio broadcasts and also provided play-by-play of the action on several occasions. Lopes worked in media relations with the Rox as well, and was responsible for website management and production of game notes, among a handful of other duties. 


Lopes graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in the spring of 2011, earning a bachelorís degree in journalism with a minor in sociology. During his time in Amherst, he served as the Sports Operations Director at the student-run radio station on campus, 91.1 WMUA. Lopes managed all areas of the sports department, and provided play-by-play and color commentary for a variety of varsity sports, including menís and womenís basketball, football, baseball, hockey and menís lacrosse.


He is single and resides in Dennis, Massachusetts.
