ANCHORWOMEN OPEN UP 2011 CAMPAIGN
WITH, 3-1, WIN OVER WHEATON
Stoermer Leads the Way With 15 Winners

Providence, RI-Freshman middle hitter Marina Stoermer (Seattle, WA) began her Rhode Island College career in style, notching 15 kills, eight digs and five blocks in RIC’s, 3-1, win over Wheaton at The Murray Center on Thursday evening.

 

The Anchorwomen (1-0) jumped out to a hot start behind Stoermer’s three kills in the first set, knocking off the Lyons (0-1), 25-15. Wheaton answered right back to win the second set, 25-22, knotting the match at one frame apiece.

Rhode Island College picked up the intensity and rallied late in the match to take the final two sets, 25-12 and 25-15. RIC’s Elysce Tackmann earned her first win as the Anchorwomen’s coach in the victory.

 

Defense was the key for RIC down the stretch as the squad recorded 15 blocks in the final two frames. In total, the Anchorwomen out-blocked the Lyons 24-9, with sophomore middle hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) recording nine of them. Cabral also finished second on the team in kills with seven.

Junior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) was instrumental in RIC’s success offensively, dishing out 22 assists in total. On the other hand, Wheaton junior setter Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, CT) was equally as effective for the Lyons, handing out 24 helpers in the loss.

 

Sophomore defensive specialist Harley Mitchell (North Smithfield, RI) led the Anchorwomen with nine digs, while junior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) and senior right side hitter Rachel Perry (Swansea, RI) each contributed six kills.

Sophomore middle hitter Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, NH) led the Lyons in kills with seven, while junior outside hitter Rachel Vergara (Needham, MA) chipped in with six winners. Senior libero Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, CA) posted a match-high 19 digs.

 

RIC is back in action next weekend, as the Anchorwomen head to Waltham, Mass. for the Brandeis Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10. They’ll open up the tournament at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 9 against Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut.
