RIC SNAPS 23-MATCH LOSING STREAK
IN, 5-4, WIN OVER WORCESTER STATE
Batek & Belanger Seal Little East Win

Providence, R.I.-The Rhode Island College women’s tennis team earned their first victory of the 2011 season on Saturday, knocking off the Worcester State University Lancers, 5-4, in Little East Conference action. It was the first win for the Anchorwomen since they topped UMass Dartmouth on October 20, 2009. RIC had lost 23 consecutive matches prior to this afternoon’s victory.

RIC (1-7, 1-1 LEC) notched a pair of victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, to jump out early against Worcester State (2-3, 0-1 LEC). Freshman Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) and senior Gabriela Batek (Greenville, RI) teamed up to earn the first win (8-3) at the top spot, while the duo of junior Doris Belanger (West Warwick, RI) and freshman Gianna Vallante (Coventry, RI) tallied the second victory (8-6).

The Anchorwomen kept the momentum going through the first three singles sets, as Brown earned her second victory of the afternoon (6-2, 6-2) at No. 1 singles. Batek and Belanger finished at the same time to assure the hosts of the win. Batek won at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-3), while at No. 3 singles, Belanger posted the day’s only shutout (6-0, 6-0) to raise her team-leading singles win total to four victories.

 

Freshman Erin Desmarais (Gardner, MA) had a pair of victories for the Lancers at No. 3 doubles (8-3) and No. 5 singles (6-1, 6-1).

 

In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen hit the road to take on the Bridgewater State Bears Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
