ANCHORMEN BLANK UMD, 2-0, ON HOMECOMING
Clark Helps RIC to First Shutout of the Season

Providence, RI-Behind senior goalkeeper Nick Clarkís (East Bridgewater, MA) first shutout of the 2011 campaign, the Rhode Island College menís soccer team knocked off UMass Dartmouth, 2-0, in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

UMass Dartmouth (5-3-1, 1-1-1 LEC) controlled possession early in the ballgame, firing six shots on Clark in the first 20 minutes; including one in the 10th minute by freshman forward Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde) that hit the post. Three of the shots were one-on-one with Clark, as the Corsairs slipped through the defense for open looks, only to get rejected by RICís senior netminder.

RIC (6-4, 2-1 LEC) survived a scare in the 20th minute when junior midfielder Anthony Dos Santos (New Bedford, MA) broke free in the box. Dos Santos eluded Clark and blasted a shot towards a wide open net. However, junior defender Sean Maguire (Portsmouth, RI) stepped in front of the open goal and sent the shot out of harmís way.

The Anchormen dodged another bullet in the 26th minute when a penalty kick was awarded to the Corsairs after a foul in the box. Borges, who was chosen to take the shot for UMD, fooled the goalkeeper as Clark went left, while Borges went right. However, the freshman forwardís shot went well wide of the net, keeping the Corsairs off the scoreboard.

Rhode Island College caught a break in the waning seconds of the first half, after a shot from senior forward Mike Patriarca (Warren, RI) hit the crossbar and bounced loose in the box. Freshman forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) pounced on the rebound, but was fouled from behind with one second left on the clock, setting up the penalty kick opportunity to end the half. The Anchormen would capitalize, as senior forward Hector Espildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain) ripped a shot past junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA) for his second goal of the season, which gave RIC a 1-0 lead.

RIC increased its advantage in the second half thanks to Espildora Fortunoís league-leading sixth assist of the season. The senior found Patriarca for a perfectly placed header in the box off of a corner kick, putting the Anchormen on top, 2-0, in the 55th minute.

The Corsairs still managed to outshoot RIC in the game, 19-12, but their chances were limited in the second half. The Anchormen played stout defense through the second frame, despite being a man down over the final eight minutes as senior forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, MA) was ejected after receiving his second yellow card of the game. It was another physical tilt for RIC, as each team received four yellow cards in the match. The Anchormen were also charged with 26 fouls in the game, while UMD recorded 22.
