BOYER’S 19 KILLS & 16 DIGS POWER ANCHORWOMEN PAST UMASS DARTMOUTH
RIC Earns First LEC Win & Improves Home Mark to 8-1

Providence, R.I.-Junior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) posted a double-double with 19 kills and 16 digs as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team stayed hot, racking up their eighth victory in the squad’s last nine matches, with a 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21) win over UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference action played at The Murray Center on Tuesday night.

 

RIC (10-7, 1-2 LEC) opened the match with a victory in the first set. The Anchorwomen jumped out to an early lead in the second set, only to watch UMass Dartmouth (10-8, 1-2 LEC) storm back to win, 26-24.

The Anchorwomen had an early 10-point lead in third set as well, but watched it evaporate rather quickly as the Corsairs rallied back once again. RIC managed to hang on to win, 26-24, and eventually finished off UMD in the fourth set, 25-21.

 

Boyer added four blocks and three aces. Sophomore libero Harley Mitchell (North Smithfield, RI) also tallied double-digit digs, finishing with 10 in the game.

Freshman middle hitter Marina Stoermer (Seattle, WA) continued to build on her campaign for Little East Rookie of the Year, notching 13 kills, eight digs and six blocks. Meanwhile, junior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) recorded 42 assists and eight blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) was solid as well, registering eight kills, seven digs and four blocks.

 

For the Corsairs, senior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA) led the way with 17 kills, while junior setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA) posted 28 assists. Sophomore libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) tallied 13 digs in the loss, while senior outside hitter Cami Ascher (Natick, MA) added 10 kills. 

 

RIC improved its home record to 8-1 and has won six straight matches.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Eastern Nazarene on Thursday, Oct. 6 (7 p.m.).
