RIC DROPS, 2-0, CONTEST AT MONTCLAIR STATE

Montclair, N.J.- Senior midfielder Sean Pauls (Denville, NJ) snapped a scoreless tie in the second half and sophomore midfielder Dan Mendoza Hackensack, NJ) added an insurance goal late as the Red Hawks posted their sixth straight win, knocking off Rhode Island College, 2-0 at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA) made six saves for RIC (6-5), who had its four-game winning streak snapped. Junior netminder Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ) made one save for his fourth shutout of the year for Montclair State (9-1-2).

In the second half, the Red Hawks stepped up the offensive pressure after a scoreless first half, outshooting the Anchormen in the second stanza, 10-1. Pauls had a shot from six yards out on the right side just go over the crossbar in the 50th minute and senior midfielder Kevin Zalewski (Parsippany, NJ) was stopped by Clark on a similar attempt less than a minute later.

In the 53rd minute, freshman forward Brian Cullen (Clementon, NJ) ran on to a ball at the top of the box. Clark and one of his defenders collided leaving the net wide open. Cullen attempted to chase down the ball as it rolled near the end line. The forward managed to get to it before the ball went out of play; however his difficult shot attempt was corralled by Clark to keep the game scoreless.

Three minutes later, Pauls drew first blood with his fourth goal of the season. Zalewski crossed a ball from 35 yards out on the left side to Pauls, who then fired a shot underneath the crossbar past a diving Clark in the 57th minute. It was the second goal of the season for Pauls.

Mendoza added the insurance goal in the 87th minute, beating Clark on a breakaway for his 11th score of the season. In total, Montclair State outshot the Anchormen, 16-4 and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior midfielder Hector Espildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain) launched the lone shot on goal for RIC.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Western Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 8 (noon).
