ANCHORMEN SNAP TWO-GAME LOSING SKID
IN, 4-1, WIN AT WESTFIELD STATE

Westfield-Mass.-Rhode Island College garnered goals from senior forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI), senior striker Mike Patriarca (Warren, RI), freshman forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) and sophomore midfielder Ignacio Cespedes (Fitchburg, MA) as the Anchormen posted a 4-1 win over Westfield State in a non-conference men's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon.

 

RIC (8-7), which had lost three of its last four games, snaps a two-game losing skid with the win. The Owls (8-6-1) suffer their fourth straight setback.

Freshman defender Patrick LaRoche (Gardner, MA) assisted on the Anchormen's first two goals. Costa scored in the seventh minute on a one-timer following a free kick from 40-yards out.

 

Asiedu scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner in the 18th minute, which staked the visitors to a 2-0 halftime lead.

The hosts cut their deficit in half, 2-1, in the 50th minute on Justin Laliberte's (Easthampton, MA) fourth marker of the season. Laliberte received a skipping pass from Dan Brady (Wilbraham, MA) across the six-yard box and stuffed the ball to the left of RIC senior goalkeeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA).

 

RIC responded with two unassisted goals by Patriarca in the 61st minute and Cespedes 12 minutes later to ice the game.

The Owls held the advantage in shots, 28-13, and corner kicks, 10-6. Clark made a season-high 13 saves to earn the win.

 

 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Plymouth State on Saturday, Oct. 22 (1 p.m.).
