THORNTONíS 21 KILLS LEAD COLONIALS
PAST ANCHORWOMEN, 3-1
Stoermer Posts 12 Winners in LEC Loss

Providence, R.I.-Junior middle hitter Paxton Thornton (Sharon, CT) notched 21 kills and eight digs, while freshman setter Jennifer Hogan (Franklin Square, NY) handed out 41 assists to lead the Western Connecticut State Colonials to a 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 25-16) victory over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in Little East Conference action on Tuesday.

 

RIC (15-11, 2-4 LEC) fell behind early, dropping the first two sets to WestConn (21-8, 4-2 LEC), before storming back in the third set to force a fourth frame. However, the Anchorwomen couldnít overcome the deficit and suffered just their second loss (11-2) at The Murray Center this season.

Freshman middle hitter Marina Stoermer (Seattle, WA) led the way for Rhode Island College with 12 kills, six digs and three blocks. Junior right side hitter Rachel Perry (Swansea, MA) posted nine kills, while junior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) tallied eight kills and nine digs in the loss. Sophomore libero Harley Mitchell (North Smithfield, RI) added nine digs.

 

Along with Thornton and Hogan, the Colonials were paced by senior libero Kelley Collins (Massapequa, NY) and her game-high 24 digs. Freshman middle blocker Heather Williams (Kingston, NY) recorded nine kills and four blocks, while freshman outside hitter Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) chipped in with eight kills and seven digs.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the regular season with a Little East Conference match at Plymouth State on Saturday, Oct. 29.
