RIC WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PREPARES FOR LEC TOURNAMENT WITH SPLIT AT PLYMOUTH STATE

Plymouth, N.H.-Rhode Island College split a tri-match played at Plymouth State University's Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon to conclude the regular season. The Anchorwomen wrapped up Little East Conference action by falling to Plymouth State, 3-1 (12-25, 18-25, 25-21, 10-25), and then defeated Worcester State, 3-1, (24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 25-11), to salvage a split.

 

Plymouth State (22-9, 6-1 LEC), which went on to defeat Worcester State (12-16) later in the day, claimed a share of the 2011 Little East Conference Regular Season Championship with the win over RIC and will host the Little East Tournament Semifinals and Finals on Nov. 5-6.

 

The Anchorwomen (16-12, 2-5 LEC) finished the season in sixth place and secured the final spot in the upcoming Little East Tournament. Sixth-seeded RIC will travel to third-seeded Keene State on Tuesday, Nov. 1 for a first round match. Rhode Island College was shut out, 3-0, by the Owls in the two team's regular season meeting on Sept. 17.

 

Freshman middle hitter Marina Stoermer (Seattle, WA) led the way for the hosts with 24 kills, three service aces and six digs. Junior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) compiled 18 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) registered 16 kills, six service aces, 22 digs and five blocks. Junior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) handed out 30 assists.

 

RIC was down, 2-0, vs. the Panthers in the first match, but extended the contest by winning the third stanza. Plymouth State rebounded to dominate the final set to earn the victory. Stoermer led the way with 14 kills, while Cabral posted nine winners. Boyer was credited with five digs.

 

After falling behind, 1-0, vs. the Lancers, RIC closed out WSU with three consecutive set victories. Boyer had 16 kills and six digs, while Stoermer also posted 10 winners.
