Anchormen Fall on the Road in Spring Opener

Dudley, Mass.-Sophomore Matt Collins (Rumford, RI) earned a pair of victories as the Rhode Island College menís tennis team fell to Nichols College, 7-2, on Tuesday at the Francis W. Robinson Courts.


Nichols extended its win streak to six matches and improves its record to 7-3, while the Anchormen drop to 0-3 on the year. RIC was playing its first match of the spring semester, having not competed since Sept. 30.

NC junior Justin DeLuca (Mashpee, MA) paired with sophomore Isiah Prosper (Manchester, NH) for a quick 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles before senior David Drucker (Bellmore, NY) and senior Arsen Gasparyan (Miami, FL) finished off an 8-3 victory at No. 1 singles.


RIC kept the pressure on the Bison behind Collins and sophomore Ted James (West Greenwich, RI) as they came from behind to complete the 9-8 (8-6) win over freshman Brandon Roode (Griswold, CT) and freshman Bradley Minton (Dudley, MA) at No. 3 doubles.


Senior Steve Carella (Rocky Hill, CT) put away freshman Anthony DeFrancesco (Branford, CT) at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-0), before Prosper handed senior Jason Morin (East Providence, RI) a loss (6-0, 6-2) at No. 3 singles.


Freshman Paul Healy (Pomfret, CT) won at No. 5 singles, defeating James (6-1, 6-0) to clinch the win for the Bison. Senior Dan Saucier (Newington, CT) finished just seconds after, handing freshman Sean Raudonaitis (Westport, MA) a loss (6-1, 6-1).


Drucker fought off sophomore Alex Werchaldo (Woonsocket, RI) at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-2), but Collins got the final point for the Anchormen in a lengthy match against freshman Andrew Haas (Northbridge, MA), to earn the victory (6-2, 6-4).


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Newbury tomorrow afternoon (3:30 p.m.).
