WERCHADLO & COLLINS PREVENT SHUTOUT
IN, 8-1, LOSS TO SPRINGFIELD

Providence, R.I.-Sophomores Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) and Matt Collins (Rumford, RI) won, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles, but that would be the lone victory for Rhode Island College as Springfield downed the Anchormen, 8-1, at the RIC Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.

 

The Pride improves to 4-6 with the win, while the Anchormen (0-5) are still searching for their first victory.

Springfield came out of the doubles round up, 2-1, thanks to an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles by freshman Kyle Mersereau (Brunswick, ME) and junior Benjamin Burnap (Westerly, RI). Jesse Boyd and sophomore Joe Giannelli (Watertown, CT) paired up to secure an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

 

The Pride swept all six singles matches to earn the victory. Mersereau defeated Werchadlo (6-3, 6-4) at the top spot, while Burnap defeated freshman Anthony DeFrancesco (Branford, CT), 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. SC senior Doug Nickerson (Falmouth, ME) also notched an impressive (6-0, 6-2) victory at No. 4 singles.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Emerson on Friday, March 30 (3:30 p.m.).
