Providence, R.I.-Freshman Ariel Pezoa-Sir (West Warwick, RI) picked up his first collegiate win at No. 5 singles, while sophomore Matt Collins (Rumford, RI) secured a victory at No. 6 singles, but the Rhode Island College men's tennis team lost, 7-2, at Emerson on Friday evening.


The Lions (2-3) opened up a can in doubles action on the day, as they barely let an Anchorman (0-6) duo slip past four en route to a dominating sweep. The No. 2 and No. 3 Lion duos of Kevin Blisniuk and Roland Lewan and Nate Fuller and James Landino led the way In the melee as the made quick work of their RIC opponents, notching 8-2 wins each. Mitchell Lance and Brent Walkoff closed out the sweep as sophomore Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) and Collins scratched the surface but couldn't hold off the Lions 8-4 win.

Singles saw EC come out strong again as they saw Walkoff and Landino weren't messing around as they packed up early with quick straight sets wins (6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1). Lance pulled in next after letting senior Jason Morin (East Providence, RI) put his foot in the door in the first set, but Lance quickly ended the threat with a 6-4, 6-0 final.


Pezoa-Sir picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Roland Lewan while Maxwell Abbushi pushed it to a super tiebreaker with Collins after initially taking a dominant 6-0 first set win, but Collins fired back winning 6-3 in set two and 10-4 in the tiebreaker.


In the final match to finish on the day, the number ones, Blisniuk and Werchadlo locked horns as Blisniuk struck first with a 6-4 win which Werchadlo answered with his own 6-4 win. In a super tiebreaker, it looked grim for Blisniuk who found himself down 7-3, before composing himself to rally off six straight points before finishing the comeback with a 10-8 win to close it.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Suffolk on Tuesday, April 3 (3:30 p.m.).
