WERCHADLO WINS AT NO. 1 SINGLES IN, 8-1, LITTLE EAST SETBACK TO BEARS

Bridgewater, Mass.-The Rhode Island College menís tennis team fell to Bridgewater State, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Little East Conference action.

 

Bridgewater improves to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Little East with the win. RIC drops to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

 

Sophomore Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) picked up the only point for the Anchormen as he came back from a set down to defeat freshman Wesley Esthimer (Franklin, MA) at No.1 singles (6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 10-7).

The Bears swept the doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of an 8-1 first flight win from the tandem of senior Mike Zagame (Uxbridge, MA) Esthimer.

 

Bridgewater won five of the six singles matches with freshman Sean Bleau (North Dighton, MA) giving the Bears a 4-0 advantage as he posted a (6-3, 6-2) straight set victory at No. 3 singles.  Zagame clinched the match and gave BSU a 5-0 lead with a (6-0, 6-2) straight set win at No. 2 singles.

 

RIC freshman Ariel Pezoa-Sir (West Warwick, RI) posted a strong effort at No. 5 singles, before falling to sophomore Cody Farrell (Scituate, MA) (6-1, 4-6, 10-4).

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hosts Johnson & Wales on Monday, April 9 (3:30 p.m.).
