O'NEILL NETS HAT TRICK AS ANCHORWOMEN OPEN LITTLE EAST PLAY WITH, 14-7, LOSS
AT EASTERN CONNECTICUT

Willimantic, Conn.-Sophomore midfielder Jessalyn O'Neill (North Providence, RI) scored three goals as Rhode Island College opened up Little East Conference women's lacrosse play with a 14-7 loss at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday afternoon.

 

Senior attacker Nicky Drolet (Somersworth, NH) and freshman attacker Jessica Ricci (Hope, RI) rounded out the Anchorwomen's (1-5, 0-1 LEC) scoring with two goals apiece. Sophomore defender Cassy Arines (Warwick, RI) led the way with six ground balls. Classmate goalie Taryn Carbone (Cranston, RI) took the loss (1-5) with an eight-save effort.

Eastern (7-3, 1-0 LEC) scored four of the game's first five goals, before Drolet and O'Neill cut it to a one-goal, 4-3, deficit with just over seven minutes left in the first half. The Warriors scored twice to increase their advantage before Ricci tallied with nine seconds left in the stanza to make the game, 6-4, at the half.

 

The teams traded goals, with the Anchorwomen's last strike coming off of Ricci's stick with just over 10 minutes left, which left RIC trailing, 10-7. Eastern rattled off the game's last four goals and held the visitors off the scoreboard to earn its first league victory.

 

Daniella Marchitto led the way for the hosts with a game-high five goals. Goalie Kristianna Ibsen made 14 saves.

 

Eastern led in shots (28-25), ground balls (30-27) and draw controls (17-6) on the day.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will host Wheelock on Tuesday, April 3 (4 p.m.).
