WERCHADLO PICKS UP TWO WINS AS WILDCATS CLAW PAST ANCHORMEN, 5-4

Providence, R.I.-Sophomore Alex Wechadlo (Woonsocket, RI) registered a straight set win at No. 1 singles, while pairing with freshman Sean Raudonaitis (Westport, MA) for an 8-2 victory at the top doubles spot, but Johnson & Wales clawed out a 5-4 win over the Anchormen on a windy day at the RIC Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon.

 

The Wildcats improve to 5-3, while RIC drops to 1-9 on the season.

The hosts took two of three in doubles action to build a 2-1 advantage as freshman Anthony DeFrancesco (Branford, CT) and classmate Ariel Pezoa-Sir (West Warwick, RI) won, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. JWU freshman Ian Huxel (Newburgh, NY) and classmate Jacob Wanner (Lancaster, PA) secured an 8-2 decision at No. 2 doubles.

 

The singles matchups proved to be the difference as the Wildcats took four of six to ensure the victory. Werchadlo (6-1, 6-0) won at No. 1 and senior Jason Morin (East Providence, RI) won at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-2) for the Anchormen.

 

The Wildcats won three, three-set matches, starting with freshman Mariusz Wala (Woonsocket, RI) bouncing back from a first set defeat to win (1-6, 6-4, 6-4). Junior Todd Zimmerman (Whitehall, NY) won the decisive third set (6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4) at No. 5 singles and junior Drew Pontillo (Slingerlands, NY) won at the sixth and final spot (4-6, 6-4, 6-3).

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Gordon on Thursday, April 12 (3:30 p.m.).
