WERCHADLO & COLLINS WIN IN, 7-2,
LITTLE EAST SETBACK TO UMASS BOSTON

Providence, R.I.-Sophomores Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) and Matt Collins (Rumford, RI) each recorded singles victories for Rhode Island College as the Anchormen fell to UMass Boston, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts in Little East Conference action.

 

After UMass Boston (6-3, 1-1 LEC) opened up the contest with three consecutive victories at doubles to give the Beacons an early, 3-0, advantage, Werchadlo gave RIC (1-10, 0-2 LEC) its first win of the afternoon as he topped freshman David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) at No. 1 singles (3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).

 

However, straight set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for junior Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, MA) and sophomore Charles Lai (Boston, MA) sealed the win for the Beacons.

Senior Jason Morin (East Providence, RI) nearly knocked off UMB sophomore Seth Shavers (Boston, MA) at No. 4 singles, before Shavers rallied back for the victory (4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4). Collins rounded out the scoring at No. 6 singles with a (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) victory over senior Himanshu Dubey (Lucknow, India).

 

Loyer, Shavers and Lai each recorded multiple wins on the afternoon for UMass Boston, as they were victorious in their respective doubles matches.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hosts UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, April 17 in Little East Conference play (3 p.m.).
