JOHNSON HURLS COMPLETE GAME VICTORY, GETS THREE HITS & KNOCKS IN A TRIO AS RIC SWEEPS WESTERN CONNECTICUT
Anchorwomen Stay Perfect in Little East Play

Providence, R.I.-Junior pitcher/first baseman Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) and pitcher/first baseman Jessica Borden (Lincoln, RI) each fired complete game victories, while junior right fielder Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, RI) had a pair of key RBI, as the Rhode Island College softball team swept a Little East Conference doubleheader against Western Connecticut State, 1-0 and 7-1, at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Wednesday evening.

Borden (8-4) hurled a complete-game shutout in game one, striking out four en route to the victory for Rhode Island College (15-8, 6-0 LEC). She conceded just four hits and three walks.

After five scoreless frames, Western Connecticut (18-10, 1-5 LEC) had a chance to take the lead in the top of sixth with one out and runners on second and third when senior pinch hitter Kristin Ferrante (New Paltz, NY) skied a fly ball to right field. Gingell came under it to make the catch and then gunned down senior shortstop Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY) at the plate as she attempted to tag up from third for the inning ending double play.

Just a half of an inning later, the Anchorwomen scratched out the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth after sophomore center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) opened the frame with a single up the middle off of Colonials senior pitcher Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT). After Johnson bunted to move Pokora to third, Gingell came through in the clutch again with an RBI single that scored Pokora and gave RIC a 1-0 lead.

Dargon (13-4) surrendered one run off seven hits in the complete game loss. The right-hander struck out six while walking none.

In game two, the Anchorwomen took an early first inning lead in unusual fashion. After junior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) and Pokora were both walked by Western sophomore starting pitcher Stephanie Moss (Brookfield, CT) to put a pair of runners on base, Johnson and Gingell reached on back-to-back infield errors, scoring both Jandreau and Pokora, and giving the Anchorwomen a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, Borden and freshman shortstop Katelyn Sykora (Waterford, CT) each singled to open the stanza. After Jandreau singled to score Borden, Johnson lined a single up the middle to score both Sykora and Jandreau, which gave RIC a 5-0 lead.

Western scored their only run of the day in the top of the fourth, as sophomore second baseman Jessica Caturano (Holbrook, NY), who reached on a single to center field, was driven home on an RBI ground out from freshman third baseman Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) to cut the deficit to four.

However, RIC added some insurance in the fourth as Johnson singled in Sykora to put the hosts up by five. Moments later, Gingell registered an RBI ground out to score Jandreau and give the Anchorwomen a 7-1 lead.

Johnson (7-4) earned the complete game victory, striking out three and walking three, while allowing just one run off seven hits. Moss (4-6) was tagged with the loss for the Colonials. She surrendered seven runs (five earned) off seven hits and six walks, while striking out eight.

Jandreau went 4-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead RIC, while Johnson went 3-for-6 with three RBI. Sykora went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Gingell added a pair of RBI on the day.

Caturano and senior center fielder Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) each had a pair of hits for Western. owHowHo
