WERCHADLO PICKS UP TWO VICTORIES IN, 7-2, LOSS TO SALEM STATE

Salem, Mass.-Sophomore Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) won at No. 1 singles and paired with freshman Anthony DeFrancesco (Branford, CT) for a victory at No. 1 doubles, but the Rhode Island College men's tennis team fell, 7-2, to Salem State in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

 

Werchadlo won in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) and paired with DeFrancesco for a 7-2 decision at the top doubles spot.

 

The victory gives Salem State its second Little East win as it improve to 2-3 in conference and 8-6 overall. Rhode Island College slips to 1-12 and 0-4 in conference play.

 

Salem State took two out of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to earn the five-point win. Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, MA) and Matt Lee (Pembroke, MA) won at No. 2 doubles and  Kenny Hodgkins (Winthrop, MA) and Jong (Joe) Kim (Seoul, South Korea) won at No. 3 doubles. Bizhoti and Leee won 8-1 over senior Jason Morin (East Providence, RI) and freshman Sean Raudonaitis (Westport, MA), while Hodgkins and Lee won 8-3 over sophomore Ted James (West Greenwich, RI) and freshman Ariel Pezoa-Sir (West Warwick, RI).

 

In the rest of singles action for the hosts, Lee continued his solid production at No. 2 singles, winning (6-1, 6-1) over DeFrancesco. Bizhoti won (6-1, 6-1) at third flight singles while Giller, Hodgkins and Kim swept through four-six singles by winning their matches in straight sets.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at home against Western Connecticut on Wednesday, April 25 (3 p.m.).
