WERCHADLO WINS AT NO. 1 SINGLES AS ANCHORMEN END SEASON AT USM

Providence, R.I.-Sophomore Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) recorded a pair of victories as the Rhode Island College menís tennis team fell to Southern Maine, 7-2, on Saturday in the season finale for the Anchormen.

 

Earning its fourth straight win, Southern Maine improves to 10-4 and 3-3 in the Little East Conference. Rhode Island College ends its season with a 1-14 overall record and an 0-6 mark in the conference.

 

 

 

 

Werchadlo and freshman Anthony DeFrancesco (Branford, CT) came away with the victory at No. 1 doubles (9-8) to open the action. However, the Huskies edged out the Anchormen in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, 8-1 and 8-4, respectively.

 

Werchadlo was again triumphant at No. 1 singles for Rhode Island College over USM junior Adam Whitman (New Castle, NH) in straight sets (7-6, 6-2). Yet, the Huskies swept the rest of the singles matches to close out the visitors. Sophomore Zach Caron (North Conway, NH) fought back to top DeFrancesco at No. 2 singles (2-6, 6-1, 7-5), while USM freshmen Scott Gagne (Lewiston, ME) and Thaddeus St. John (Weld, ME) picked up wins at third and fourth singles respectively. Gagne was victorious (6-0, 6-1) while St. John earned the decision (6-0, 6-2).

 

Freshman Zac Cary (Buxton, ME) and sophomore Corey Dyke (Monmouth, ME) rounded out the scoring with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Cary came away with the win (6-0, 7-5) while Dyke was the victor (6-4, 6-1).
