OPPITO LEADS RIC AT FIRST WOMENíS SWIMMING COMPETITION

North Dartmouth, Mass.-Freshman Leah Oppito (Eatontown, NJ) had a strong performance in the Rhode Island College womenís swimming teamís inaugural meet at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. It was an individual meet with no team scoring.

 

RIC established womenís swimming as a varsity sport in March and the 2011-12 season marks the first season the Anchorwomen are competing.

Oppito placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (27.34), eighth in the 100 freestyle (1:01.50) and 10th in the 50 backstroke (32.43). She also helped RIC place ninth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:20.91) and 11th in the 200 medley relay (2:10.67).

 

Sophomore co-captain Sophie Kanno (Cranston, RI) placed fifth in the 100 fly (1:13.64), seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.43) and tied for ninth in the 50 fly (31.32).

Freshman Amanda DiPaola (Exeter, RI) placed 14th in the 50 breaststroke (38.05), 18th in the 100 freestyle (1:06.96), 30th in the 50 freestyle (30.40)

 

Kanno and DiPaola joined Oppito in the 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the 2011 Little East Conference Championships, hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, Dec. 3.
