NICOLL & SUGERMEYER PICK UP PINS AS
RIC SECURES, 31-12, WIN OVER WPI

Providence, R.I.-Sophomore 285 lbs. Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) and junior 133 lbs. Mike Sugermeyer (Hampden, MA) each pinned their opponents to help guide the Rhode Island College wrestling team to a 31-12 over WPI at The Murray Center on Wednesday night in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action.  

 

RIC (7-6, 4-1 NEWA) found itself trailing after the first bout at 149 lbs. as eighth-ranked freshman Andrew Tanner (Danville, NH) earned a 4-2 victory to put WPI (1-4, 1-3 NEWA) on top early, 3-0. However, the Anchormen bounced back to take a 4-3 lead behind third-ranked sophomore Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) at 157 lbs., as he notched a 9-0 major decision victory over fifth-ranked freshman Zach Hartzell (Gettysburg, PA).

Freshman 165 lbs. Robert Sotelo (Little Falls, NJ) picked up a 9-3 decision over sophomore Tom Lacroix (Salem, NH) to give the hosts a 7-3 lead. Yet, the Engineers immediately responded as fourth-ranked sophomore 174 lbs. Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) put WPI ahead, 9-7, with a pin at the 3:11 mark.

 

The Anchormen would regain the lead at 184 lbs., as sophomore Adam Lynch (New Milford, CT) earned a 5-2 decision over freshman Teddy Kostopoulos (Milford, CT). Freshman 197 lbs. Jason Zeramby (East Greenwich, RI), who was bumped up a weight class prior to the match, followed Lynch’s performance with a 5-3 sudden victory over freshman Bryan Barnash (Trumbull, CT), giving RIC a 13-9 lead.

The Anchormen took control of the match at 285 lbs., as Nicoll pinned sophomore Joseph Szerszunowicz (Milford, MA) at the 3:58 mark, putting RIC on top, 19-9. After a forfeit at 125 lbs. secured the win for the hosts, Sugermeyer pinned freshman Scott Carpenter (Calais, ME) at 133 lbs. to give the Anchormen a 31-9 lead. The Engineers rallied to post a 3-1 sudden victory at 141 lbs. behind eighth-ranked sophomore Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH), to close out the contest.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will see action at the Budd Whitehill Duals, hosted by Lycoming, on Jan. 13-14.
