GAUTHIER NOTCHES 100TH CAREER WIN & CRUMP GOES 4-0 AS RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE GOES 2-2 AT NEW ENGLAND DUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Springfield, Mass.-Senior 125 lbs. Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) earned his 100th career victory, while sophomore 174 lbs. Caleb Crump (Tucson, AZ) went 4-0, as the Rhode Island College wrestling team went 2-2 at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championships, hosted by Springfield on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Anchormen (11-10) wrestled without two of its top competitors in sophomore 141 lbs. Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) and senior 149 lbs. Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ).

Gauthier, who also went 4-0, earned his 100th win (100-42) by defeating Roger Williams' Dante Porrazzo, 4-1, in the Anchormen's final match of the day.

 

Rhode Island College was seeded third at the tournament and opened with a 30-12 win over 14th-seeded Norwich. Gauthier opened with a technical fall and junior 133 lbs. Mike Sugermeyer (Hamden, MA) followed with a decision to stake RIC to an 8-0 advantage.

 

After surrendering  a forfeit in Giblin's spot, the Anchormen rattled off five straight wins to assure the victory. Senior 149 lbs. Geoff Riccio (Lancaster, MA) got the club off with a decision and Crump picked up a major victory.

Sixth-seeded Southern Maine got a win in the final bout of the match to snap a 22-all tie and defeat RIC, 25-22. The match went back and forth with Gauthier getting RIC off to a 6-0 lead with a pin. The Huskies rattled off three straight wins with a forfeit, a major decision and a pin to take 22-6 lead. RIC battled back to tie the match with four straight wins. A Crump pin and a major victory by freshman 197 lbs. Kyle Humphries (East Longmeadow, MA) capped the comeback bid.

RIC avenged a 25-14 loss to 10th-seeded Western New England back on Dec. 7 by taking down the Golden Bears, 36-19. Pins by sophomore 157 lbs. Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA), Crump, freshman Paul Cafone (Fairfield, NJ) and Humphries, to go along with a Gauthier forfeit, were the keys to the victory.

Fifth-seeded Roger Williams downed RIC, 23-12, to finish the day. Gauthier's milestone and Sugermeyer decision staked RIC to a 6-0 lead, which was quickly erased with a forfeit. A Barrucci victory at 157 lbs. briefly tied the match, but the Hawks responded with a major victory. Crump pulled RIC within two with his fourth consecutive win, but the Hawks closed out RIC with a decision and a pin.
