CAFONE’S PIN HIGHLIGHTS, 30-12, LOSS
TO DIV. I BROWN

Providence, R.I.-Freshman Paul Cafone (Fairfield, NJ) pinned his opponent at 184 lbs. as the Rhode Island College wrestlers fell to Division I Brown University, 30-12, on Saturday afternoon.

 

RIC (11-12) went into battle against Brown (4-4) without two of its top grapplers in sophomore Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) and senior Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) for the second straight weekend.

After the Bears opened with a three straight victories at 125 lbs. through 141 lbs., senior Geoff Riccio (Lancaster, MA) nearly topped freshman Kenneth Staub (Dalton Gardens, ID) at 149 lbs. before falling in a 5-4 decision. Sophomore Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) and sophomore Caleb Crump (Tucson, AZ) both kept things close in their matches in at 157 lbs. and 174 lbs. respectively, before falling by virtue of a decision, 5-3 and 1-0.

 

Trailing 27-0, the Anchormen finally put points on the board at 184 lbs. as Cafone pinned freshman Ophir Bernstein (Allen, TX) at the 1:01 mark to make it, 27-6. Rhode Island College added six more points at 285 lbs. by virtue of a forfeit for sophomore Brandon Regnault (Johnston, RI), finishing the day with 12 points.

165 lbs. Patrick LaBuz (BU) pinned Jon Goulding (RIC) at 6:15

174 lbs. Ricky McDonald (BU) dec. Caleb Crump (RIC), 1-0

184 lbs. Paul Cafone (RIC) pinned Ophir Bernstein (BU) at 1:01

197 lbs. Marcos Aranda (BU) dec. Kyle Humphries (RIC), 3-1

285 lbs. Brendan Regnault (RIC) won by forfeit

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Roger Williams and Springfield on Saturday, Feb. 4 (noon). The match will be held at the RIC Recreation Center.
