GAUTHIER TO COMPETE AT
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

FOUR EARN ALL-NEW ENGLAND HONORS AS ANCHORMEN PLACE FIFTH AT NEW ENGLAND WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Middletown, Conn.-Senior 125 lbs. Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) was selected as a wild card to compete at the 2012 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships after competing at the 2012 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships, hosted by Wesleyan on Feb. 25-26. In addition, sophomore 141 lbs. Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) will also head to the NCAA tourney as the NEWA's first alternate. The NCAAs will be held in La Crosse, Wisconsin from March 9-10.

 

Rhode Island College finished the two-day N.E. competition in fifth place. Wesleyan won the title with a score of 126.0, finishing just a half a point ahead of second place Springfield (125.5). Johnson & Wales came in third (87.5), while Roger Williams was fourth (80.0). The Anchormen totaled a score of 71.0.

 

 

 

In addition to Gauthier and Giblin, two additional Anchormen attained All-New England status at the championships.

 

Gauthier earned All-New England honors with a second place finish. He went 3-2 at the championships, winning two matches before falling to Coast Guard's Nate Giorgio, 4-1 SV, in the semifinals. Gauthier won his next bout to set up a re-match with Giorgio in the finals, but fell, 10-1.

This will be the second consecutive season Gauthier will compete at the NCAA Championships, having earned All-American honors with a seventh place finish in 2011. He is currently 32-10 on the year.

 

Giblin earned All-New England honors with a second place finish. He went 3-1, winning three straight matches to reach the finals. Williams' Ces Antista battled back from a loss in his first match to win six straight, capped by a 10-3 victory over Giblin in the finals. Giblin is 23-4 on the season.

Senior 149 lbs. Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) earned All-New England honors with a third place finish. He went 4-2 at the championships.

 

Sophomore 157 lbs. Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) earned All-New England honors with a sixth place finish. He went 1-2 at the championships.

 

Head Coach Jay Jones' team finishes the 2012 season with a 15-13 overall record, a 10-5 mark against NEWA opposition and a 3-2 mark in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.
